Contemporary age media

Media regulation is difficult to maintain in the contemporary age. There are many different bodies that regulate some being non-statutory such a the bbfc however they still have to abide by laws of the government showing that they can still be influenced. Television is monitored and regulated by offcom which is statutory. The problems that arise with this is that there is the potential for regulation to change drastically every four years. The internet is normally non-statutory and reactive, this causes issues as millions may have seen the content before it is removed. With the internet involved many individuals are able to create their own content causing an overload in the amount of information that can be regulated. I believe that this is ineffective as people are always able to reupload content. However television being pro-active/preemptive in its regulation shows censorship which in some cases may lead to maladaptive issues within the media itself (for example class censorship) this can also create a change in social norms. I believe that film and television are more effective in their regulation than the internet is, but, also believe that all are inefficient. We now have access to content continuously and could lead to a desensitized society, this means that some individuals may be more likely to become violent as they are so desensitized to the things that they have seen on screen. The internet has no set regulation and the fact that children and sensitive adults are able to view it at any time may cause issues as they are easily influenced and children are not able to tell the difference between reality and fiction. In this essay I will explain why I believe that the regulation we currently use is ineffective.
