"How far do changes to the regulation of media reflect broader social changes?"

The purpose of regulation is to protect the public from harmful or explicit content – this is mostly applied to children or venerable adults. Over the years regulation has become more lax with the internet eventually contributing to the idea that information and shows are always available online. This shows the decline of regulation efficiency due to the fact that the internet is less regulated than both film (bbfc) and television (ofcom). The internet is part of reactive regulation as it happens after the information is made public, The bbfc can classify, censor or ban them completely and I part of proactive regulation. And lastly Ofcom is a government lead regulator in charge of television regulation they can use classification and put above 18 content after the watershed, they can fine companies and channels or revoke the channels right to broadcast. The media has more of a conservative type of regulation in place to protect children and vunerable adults to something that may be de...

Regulation - effectiveness in netflix era + who should regulate for children.

Film regulation is not effective in the Netflix era as the internet has no governing body of regulation. Due to the fact there is no classification, there is the possibility that content that is classified by the television or film industry may be easier to access by younger people. The access to the internet has created a way for multiple people to create content which can be accessed at all times. One way that this can impact the populace is by creating a desensitized society. this could create a lower outrage on violent crimes seen as the norm. On the other hand However, some larger organizations are using the classifications set by the bbfc – (such as Netflix) this shows a persuasion on the internet that is largely safer than YouTubes algorithms. This may be for industry gain and not for the families as parents are more likely to subscribe to something they believe is safer for their children. Desensitization theory states that people that are desensitized are less likely to have ...

Contemporary age media

Media regulation is difficult to maintain in the contemporary age. There are many different bodies that regulate some being non-statutory such a the bbfc however they still have to abide by laws of the government showing that they can still be influenced. Television is monitored and regulated by offcom which is statutory. The problems that arise with this is that there is the potential for regulation to change drastically every four years. The internet is normally non-statutory and reactive, this causes issues as millions may have seen the content before it is removed. With the internet involved many individuals are able to create their own content causing an overload in the amount of information that can be regulated. I believe that this is ineffective as people are always able to reupload content. However television being pro-active/preemptive in its regulation shows censorship which in some cases may lead to maladaptive issues within the media itself (for example class censorship) t...

Regulation

Regulation is the censorship of particularly harmful content and footage that is available to the public. This can be via blocking it altogether or a system that allows for people of certain ages being able to access media (the age rating on films, games, websites and even some books) this of course has to be implemented with laws or the regulation would not work – however some people still do not follow that understanding and illegal proxy sites like pirate bay exists in which people can steal content as long as they have the means. Schools can regulate what their students see (via networks which is a much smaller scale regulation) and are prone to block indecent websites as well as social media sites. An example in music is the censoring of words considered crass or cuss. Regulators on the other hand must be a well informed diverse group of people with different views. The would most likely to emulate an audience so that the information does not offend the sensibilities of different ...

How does Narrative apply to the trailer? christmas holiday re-write

In this essay I will be discussing how narrative applies to my trailer. I will be doing this by using existing examples from my trailer and the theories put forward by Todorov, Levi- Strauss and Propp. Todorov states that there are five stages in a narrative however as I am creating a trailer and not a film the only one that will be applicable is Disruption/ Disequilibrium. This is as equilibrium gives backstory and resolution shows the ending to the audience. We applied this in my trailer throughout however it is shown on screen most in the montage sequence. The monsters clawed hand is shown dragging over a tiled wall at the same time as another clip of the victim. the lowkey lighting and blood on the monster’s hand; as well as the bruising on the victim shows that this is the disruption as it has the conventions of a monster mauling a victim stock scene. My work conforms to the rules of Todorov’s theory as it would be the mid-section of the film and works as such. However, the jump ...

DMT essay

Digital Media Technology is the software packages and hardware used to create media. These packages allow you to create more with ease and have the same equipment used by professionals. My magazine conveys the idea of experimentation however the software is pre-packaged and therefore less creative. There is less hyper reality within our trailer as we were more creative and created a monster so the features are not realistic. To be able to create the parts we also had to communicate over social media networks creating an easier way of communication In my AS preliminary task I had access to the same camera I used at the end of the year for my final magazine. As I had not worked with it before I was unable to use the settings correctly. One skill that I did learn was how to use the rule of thirds using the grid that you can use on the display from the menu. Creatively this helped me guide shots so that they followed the conventions of a magazine. However, this can be argued to not be cre...

creativity and RMT - Essay

Conventions are followed as they allow for the audience to understand what genre or type of media a piece is. They can however be subverted or the conventions can be changed slightly while still recognizable; for example, a boost could be shaped like a circle or square, but if the intended meaning is shown (in this example a form of advertisement) then the use of convention is successful. I have learnt from the past two years that semiotics is different in each genre and how to adjust to them. In AS my focus was music magazines in a genre of our choice, to create the magazine I used References from real media texts or RMT. One of the ones that I used was NME – this was due to the fact it had a wide range of diverse types of artist but the outline was the same – this choice limited my creativity, however, it did allow me to understand the conventions of layout. From the magazine, I learned that the cover lines, boost and images fell into the ‘rule of thirds’ this helped me space my writ...

Research and Planning - Essay

My understanding and creativity when making media products over the course has been developed. This is as it has impacted the way in which I use connotations and codes to create different media text effectively. In my preliminary task, I did not understand the codes and conventions as I had not done any textual analysis or layout planning. Additionally, I did not use any references. This effected my college magazine as the result wasn’t clear as conventional college magazine. This limited my creativity as I was required to create from what I could remember about magazines and therefore missed conventions such as: main cover lines, boosts and appropriate sizing for secondary images. My music magazine was more successful due to my textual analysis which helped me to create a more conventional rock music magazine. By using multiple references, I identified different conventions for example the rule of thirds – meaning that the magazine works in triadic form that allows for a concise out...

Creativity Summary

Technology helps creativity occur by creating the resources needed to do it easily. For example in our trailer we use digital cameras which makes it easier than it would have been before when only analogue cameras were around. The connection of ideas through technology / social media allows for individuals to link their ideas and then build on them together. For example our group uses whatsapp to connect ideas and other social media and the internet to take on ideas that have been made or people want to make. Our blog is also a use of technology which helps hold it on a platform in which others can see. They could also take ideas from this. Re-imaging film ideas is a way of creating new and more complex pieces that the audience will like from preexisting text and film. Away of doing this is taking scenes or ideas from them and then re-arranging the storyline to fit your idea – which makes it individualistic (which is what creativity is shown to be).An example from our work is the trai...

media language theory essay 1

Saussure’s semiotic codes like writing codes ie writing in blood on a wall is used to create a theme and to show the meaning. Barthes then added to this by having a literal meaning – denotation and a suggested meaning – connotation. The denotation being the blood writing on the wall whereas the connotations can be the meaning for example blood can be shown as life. Written codes can be used to move on the plot or theme. However due to desensitisation the audience ignores the meaning as it has been repeated. If we want the audience to be scared the trailer has to be more than conventions. I will be evaluating how the different codes can be used in other theories and how they can be applied to my groups trailer idea. Our trailer idea will be using symbolic codes like weaponry. This is shown as the antagonist has claws and sharp teeth that connotates that the weapons are phallic imagery as they penetrate the victim, showing power through violence. This signifies that the monster holds mas...

narrative theory corrections

The product that I will be analyzing is a trailer made by last years students – Terror House. I believe the theme of the trailer is the loss of innocence, due to the transformation of the young girl. The trailer shows the change and its effects as well as what she looks like before as a way of comparison to show that it is a supernatural. The trailer shows Todorovs theory when applied to a horror trailer. It shows that the film would have a linear structure but only uses the area of disequilibrium in an out of order montage this is due to the fact that equilibrium and resolution are not shown in horror movie trailers or they show the ending.in their trailer the montage is spliced with one scene of the antagonist along with a rising not to create tension before a jump cut – to a jump scare. The disruption is shown to be the possession of a teenage girl. Todorovs theory is relevant as when we can see the linear structure we can then break it for the trailer using only pieces from diseq...

how does/will audience theory apply to last years work?

In this essay im going to be applying audience theory. I’m going to be analysing is jawsplitters trailer from last year using examples from their work to evaluate. One of the main points is what age the audience is, in this trailer the aim was at fifteen year olds this is shown through the fact that there is very little violence and only one scene showing any blood. Audiences consume the horror genre for escape as well as an emotional release. However, these are what is referred to as active audience as the audience interacts and uses the content whereas a passive audience only consumes the content at face value. Gebners theory of cultivation states that repeated instances in the media can distort the consumers sense of reality. The trailer shows this as the blood scene at the end of the trailer was stereotypical, it also implies that we are likely to believe that this type of scene due to its regularity in horror. this signifies a change in the audience as they are no longer concerne...

genre theory essay re-write

In this essay, I will be assessing how genre applies to last years trailer (Terror House Production). The genre of the trailer is supernatural horror. Chandler States that genre types must be recognizable /familiar and have characteristics that show conventions in terror house productions they use mis-en-cne such as props make-up and setting along with low key lighting to make it recognizable as a horror trailer and/ product. The use of low key light connotates death in horror. Other conventions that make this recognizable as a horror trailer is the use of sound along with physical effects/movement to make the antagonist seem more alien. This connotates the idea of abnormality. And the idea that the mind of the victim is converted one with a broken psyche. It also signifies that the more parallel to human a monster/spirit is the more it is a threat. Mitel’s theory says that ‘genre allows audiences to make decisions’ to be able to do this the trailer most convey a specific sub genre. ...

how does representation theory apply to last years work?

I will be talking about the representation of patriarchy and misogyny in horror due to the rise in female protagonists and how their behaviour is stereotypical or subverted. I will be linking this to the five theories and explaining their use, by using The Collector trailer from last years students (jumpscare) to provide examples and reasoning. Mulveys theory states that audiences are forced to view cinematic text via the male gaze. It is largely shown in the victim shots of this trailer. In this trailer, we see this as the first victim is a young teenage girl laying across the cell floor sleeping. We can say this is the heterosexual male gaze as she is shown as an object in the viewers eye, as something to be watched. This shows that the girls purpose is stereotypical and links to the idea that men are better at physically helping themselves – which is misogynistic. However, as the genre is a slasher this subverts the idea as she is likely the ‘final girl’. This signifies a change in...

teaser trailer remake

Image

The conjuring teaser trailer content and structure analysis.

Image
In the conjuring 2 teaser trailer the film uses change in pace to keep the audience attention. This is done by using a change in pace from a slow tempo that creates tension with music in a low minor key to a montage sequence with high notes that creates a contrast in section. This is used in the beginning of the trailer where the montage is earlier on - followed by a title card and then a moment of tension in the basement followed by two claps to again change the tempo/pace. The main reason for this is to show important pieces in the montage without showing the scene and giving away too much information - this also has use of the enigma code in which the threat is not fully explained and becomes a mystery so the audience will want to 'consume'  the film. The trailer also uses binary opposites from Vladimir Propps character theory; The villain and The princess. while the main woman is not shown to be 'desired' by the hero - they are shown to be in need of savin...
