Conventions are followed as they allow for the audience to understand what genre or type of media a piece is. They can however be subverted or the conventions can be changed slightly while still recognizable; for example, a boost could be shaped like a circle or square, but if the intended meaning is shown (in this example a form of advertisement) then the use of convention is successful. I have learnt from the past two years that semiotics is different in each genre and how to adjust to them. In AS my focus was music magazines in a genre of our choice, to create the magazine I used References from real media texts or RMT. One of the ones that I used was NME – this was due to the fact it had a wide range of diverse types of artist but the outline was the same – this choice limited my creativity, however, it did allow me to understand the conventions of layout. "How far do changes to the regulation of media reflect broader social changes?"

The purpose of regulation is to protect the public from harmful or explicit content – this is mostly applied to children or venerable adults. Over the years regulation has become more lax with the internet eventually contributing to the idea that information and shows are always available online. This shows the decline of regulation efficiency due to the fact that the internet is less regulated than both film (bbfc) and television (ofcom). The internet is part of reactive regulation as it happens after the information is made public, The bbfc can classify, censor or ban them completely and I part of proactive regulation. And lastly Ofcom is a government lead regulator in charge of television regulation they can use classification and put above 18 content after the watershed, they can fine companies and channels or revoke the channels right to broadcast. the cabin in the woods themes and subtext

I n The cabin in the woods one of the themes raised in the film is teen punishment. The first piece of evidence for this is that the gamblers say "they don’t transgress" , "they can't be punished". This raises the idea that if  the characters didn’t participate in:   sex, alcohol , drugs  or violence then they would be spared. However at the end it is shown that they would die regardless. The sub text to this is as they are teenagers they were going to die due the control of outside forces other than their own   and considering the adults were in  charge , that the adults  should have been punished in the end. This is also shown when patience (the last redneck zombie) bypasses Dana on the stair case and instead kills the woman in charge of the  sacrificial ritual to 'the old ones' .
